Greentea Peng – Man Made listen on Amazon Sault – Nine At least you shouldn’t miss this one and give your repetitive, but therefore so effective “meditation” a chance for inner relaxation. In this respect, the extensive release with 18 tracks turns out to be a disadvantage, because not all songs are as strong as their single releases. Their message on other songs is similar, but musically it is not underlined as expressively. It calls for people to trust magic and think for themselves. Greentea Peng comments on a false world full of uncertainty that she does not want to believe in. The catchy chorus, which is supported by a Hammond organ, and the jam-like interlude after three minutes, everything comes together musically and lyrically. The song grooves and is one of the highlights of the record. The single “Nah It Ain’t the Same” in particular is reminiscent of old school hip-hop with the casual double bass and drum beat, the DJ scratch effects on vinyl records and Wells spoken vocals. She herself describes her music as psychedelic R’n’B, but you can also hear reggae and hip-hop influences on the album.
It immediately becomes clear that Wells’ lyrics are spiritually motivated. Greentea Peng sings “this is for” and, with an echoing effect on her voice, enumerates who this album is intended for – including “for the love” or “for light beings”. The first song “Make Noise” starts with a double bass and synth background. The South Londoner, who chose her name after her love for green tea and the slang word “peng”, takes it easy on the R’n’B and neo-soul record. With a proud 18 songs and just over an hour playing time, it falls outside the contemporary framework of “Schneller & Kürzer”, which is becoming more and more popular with streaming services such as Spotify. After two EPs with which Aria Wells aka Greentea Peng built up a fan base in recent years, her debut LP is now out Man made.
